Korean Fabric Masks: A Beginner's Guide

It is unlikely that today there is a girl who has not heard about the effect that Korean fabric masks give But even so, you’ve probably stumbled on Instagram photos of friends and celebrities “in the process” of using them more than once. This is not surprising: like almost all Korean beauty products, fabric masks have amazing photogenicity (especially “golden” masks and masks with animal faces).
But why is the modern beauty industry obsessed with fabric masks? “Korean girls have been using fabric masks for about ten years,” says Charlotte Cho, co-founder of Soko Glam and author of The Little Book of Skin Care: Korean Beauty Secrets for Healthy, Glowing Skin. "that they are good at the photo, but also because they immediately give a result and at the same time are very affordable."

Benefits of Fabric Masks

“The fabric mask forms a kind of barrier that temporarily blocks the ingredients, preventing them from evaporating,” adds Charlotte Cho. Indeed, many beauty gurus say that a large number of “magic” ingredients in your favorite creams and serums simply do not have time to penetrate the skin, and this does not depend on price or brand.
An additional bonus of tissue masks is the ability to extract excess sebum from cells, providing the skin with an optimal level of hydration. "Oily skin also needs hydration, but many girls tend to forget about it," Cho says.
Thus, fabric masks are certainly a positive experience for your skin, but do not use them too often. “Girls are sometimes addicted,” says Charlotte Cho. “It comes to the point that in Korea they become a daily beauty ritual, as evidenced by the emergence of the hashtag #onemaskaday.”

The disadvantages of fabric masks

To understand why this is bad, you should know that Korean fabric masks are still not perfect: many of them contain alcohol, fragrances and preservatives, such as phenoxyethanol and ethylhexinglycerin. Thus, without risks, they can be used no more than 1-2 times a week. Here are some tips Charlotte Chu always gives to beginners in terms of working with fabric masks:
  1. Use in the morning, at night, or at any convenient time. “They are great for every time of the day, because they don’t take more than 20 minutes. Moreover, Korean fabric masks are always disposable, and you don’t need to wash your face after them - just drive the rest of the makeup into your skin with your fingertips,” Cho says.
  2. Start by washing your face. “It’s best to start using a fabric mask with a thorough facial cleansing. Ideally, toning should follow, which will prepare the skin for active absorption of the nourishing and caring components of the mask,” the expert adds.
  3. Set a time limit. If you can theoretically hold any other face mask infinitely long, then this is not necessary in the case of fabric masks. “Never go to bed with them,” Cho warns. “If you keep the mask on your face after it gets dry, it can have the opposite effect and take moisture away from the skin."
  4. Refuse post-products. “Some fabric masks are very dense, while others are quite watery and quickly absorbed into the skin,” the expert comments. “If your mask has a watery texture, then I recommend applying a moisturizer after it. If the composition is dense and you feel it on face after application, it is better to do without additional funds.
